It was a rainy day and we had set up the studio in the small fronton of Baliarrain when we took a portrait of the former mayor, Martzelino. He told us that Baliarrain is one of those villages that 20-30 years ago began to transform itself, with the idea of bringing in more inhabitants. From having a few farmhouses around the church and cows grazing everywhere, the number of inhabitants multiplied several times thanks to the building of new houses, the improvement of the access roads, etc.
Nowadays they have a bar-restaurant, a gymnasium, a commissary, a fronton and a library among others. All this, together with its proximity to other larger villages, makes it a perfect place to live a quiet life in contact with nature. The transformation of the village has been possible thanks to the efforts of its inhabitants and the people in charge, such as Martzelino, who have worked for years to make Baliarrain a place with a high quality of life.
